Russia Accuses COI President of 'Conspiracy' to Exclude Its Athletes
Russia accused the President of the International Olympic Committee (COI), Thomas 📈 Bach, on Tuesday, of being part of a "conspiracy" with Ukraine to exclude its top athletes from this year's Paris 📈 Games.
Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made the allegation after two Russian comedians known as Vovan 📈 and Lexus released a recording of a conversation with Bach, in which he was falsely led to believe that he 📈 was speaking with a African sports official.
In the call, Bach said that the COI had set up a special panel 📈 to monitor the media and the internet to ensure that Russian athletes who made political statements in support of their 📈 government would not be able to participate in the Olympics.
"We have also offered, not just offered but asked, the Ukrainian 📈 side to provide us with information about the behavior of such athletes or officials," said Bach in English in the 📈 recording.
Zakharova posted on Telegram that Bach had "entered into a political-administrative and, apparently, criminal conspiracy with a specific party" - 📈 namely Ukraine - "to exclude sports competitors from international competitions."
She added: "The relationship between IOC President Bach and the Ukrainian 📈 Olympic Committee and its authorities, and the admissions of a 'request to monitor Russian athletes' must be the subject of 📈 a full investigation."
Relations between Russia and the COI have deteriorated significantly in the period leading up to the Olympics, where 📈 Russian and Belarusian athletes will compete as neutrals, without their flags and anthems, due to the war in Ukraine. They 📈 have also been banned from participating in the opening ceremony.
Anticipating the release of the conversation, the COI said last month 📈 that Bach had been the victim of a hoax.
The COI announced publicly that it had set up a review panel 📈 to evaluate the eligibility of all Russian and Belarusian athletes who qualify for Paris. Athletes must not have actively supported 📈 the war in Ukraine and must not have a contract with any military or security agency to be allowed to 📈 compete.
