O líder Max Verstappen acelerou na última volta e garantiu a pole position do GP do Japão, que відбуся наCircuito 👄 de Suzuka dessa vez. Aprovoding gesture of "madrugada" on the second Formula pista do season following a virtual ceremony Lewis 👄 Hamilton five wins in Australia in his pocket, which granted him a place alongside his idol, Ayrton Senna, as 👄 a three-time world champion.
Lewis Hamilton became the first Briton to win the Japanese Grand Prix, taking his 1st victory at 👄 Suzuka since Jenson Button did so - also for McLaren - in the season that saw Sebastian Vettel take the 👄 drivers' championship.
And it was not just any victory: the current seven-time world champion, who took pole in Malaysia, Qatar, 👄 the Netherlands and Belgium, started down the grid in 11th after technical problems scuppered his qualifying lap.
Some were curious 👄 as to why the Anglo-German team did not make use of strategy - given Mercedes' enduring speed across the season 👄 so far - despite Lewis managing to battle his way up to fifth, beaten in the end by Sebastian Vettel.
Sebastian 👄 Vettel got to keep P2, however, Leclerc could not make up lost ground from sixth on the grid.
The four-time world 👄 champion felt the sting of losing his pole position and duly got relegated to second by Charles Leclerc right at 👄 the start, but fighting hard with Verstappen off the line, trying to keep him from P1. He ran wide, falling 👄 to third and gifting Charles Leclerc P2. Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz could not quite pull off an overtake on the outside 👄 in Turn 2 and cut the chicane, rejoining P4. A 30.4secs stop put him back out in P8. George Russell 👄 came out from his 12th-place start to claim a P6 - made sweeter when one considers Mercedes, Red Bull and 👄 Alpine all chose to fit theirs with softs on Lap 16 in preparation for a Safety Car which came out 👄 after Yuki Tsunoda put his unwell AT003 into the barriers at Turn 3 with a driveline issue - and take 👄 the Fastest Lap of the Race bonus point. Mercedes finished just four seconds shy of Gasly, having been forced to 👄 keep their foot in it to keep up.
The safety car saw the whole field take a "breather" until the end 👄 of Lap 26, after which all the drivers, including FP3 pace-setter Oscar Piastri, empted their tyres of softs where strategically 👄 possible, before another deluge that required full wets all round. However, a separate incident - which never threatened to become 👄 a full Safety Car, resulted in a new fastest lap: 1:47.049 by Fernando Alonso - the knock-on effect saw those 👄 who were not out of sequence pass their team-mates. Zhou Guanyu made it back to P6, half a second off 👄 George Russell’s P5. Magnussen and Alonso were one of the six to change from mediums to softs - leaving Valtteri 👄 Bottas and Hamilton to pull off amazing moves at the last chicane. An inspired Mercedes call to take soft tyres 👄 saw the reigning world champion go around both Sebastian Vettel and Leclerc, finding himself 5.8 seconds down at the end 👄 of Lap 30, as Verstappen moved into the lead - only to pit in his last of three stops, putting 👄 him into a world of pain as Carlos Sainz took the world championship lead. The Spaniard could cruise, unaware that 👄 his luck was about to be compromised - even more so than after a five-second time penalty for leaving the 👄 pits with the hose still attached - when Alonso made a successful pass on his last lap to deny him 👄 any points, due to his contract requiring a top ten finish to remain relevant.
The Japanese Grand Prix became the usual 👄 suspect in F1 - Sebastian Vettel the perennial favourite to win from now on - but 2007 world champion Kimi 👄 Raikkonen did himself a disservice by putting Tsunoda, whose engine blow-up left the Japanese driver without even the luck he 👄 so desperately needed to build up following recent performances, in a wall on Lap 29 - when the rain did 👄 arrive. For quite a while it seemed a Ferrari 1-2 was possible, as Verstappen slipped down to P7, less than 👄 a second ahead of Hamilton in P8, Sainz in P6. He duly pitted so that his floor was serviced, thereby 👄 promoting Charles Leclerc - who had h arried the Williams rookie in P1 and set a succession of purple sectors 👄 only to run wide at the Casio triangle and gift Sainz his first win of the year. Norris dropped back 👄 another place when Tsunoda skated into retirement.
As it turned out, starting on soft tyres ruined Ricciardo and Magnussen's races 👄 - while Gasly needed just 14 laps to catch Piastri and Norris after his stop. Red Bull soon cut the 👄 gap throughoutQ3 and decided on a long first stint. Tsunoda changed to medium tyres, while Hamilton, Verstappen and Sainz preferred 👄 hard tyres, with Zhou sticking with medium tyres. The hard tyres worked a charm with degradation reduced. Bottas’ defence of 👄 P7 was especially entertaining; having had to fight like mad tooth and nail with Gasly. Sebastian Vettel got the jump 👄 onVerstappen, helping and Hamiton regained his second place.
